Municipality

Saint-Alexandre-de-Kamouraska

Historically at the junction of La Route des Navigateurs and La Route des Frontières of which Saint-Alexandre-de-Kamouraska is proud to be a part of, the municipality was a highly strategic roadway as people travelled through this long portage route from the St. Lawrence River on the Des Caps River in Saint-André towards the Acadian Peninsula and then to Louisbourg. Inhabitants who first settled in the region in the 1840s came from this portion of Saint-André and the migration of families accelerated with the arrival of the railroad a few years later. Today, Saint-Alexandre-de-Kamouraska is practically the agricultural attic of Kamouraska! First in terms of the importance of its farm lands but also because of the presence of Aliments Asta Inc., a large pork meat processing plant generating over 500 jobs. A booming town for many years, the village now offers a wide selection of activities and sports infrastructure, including a new covered ice rink with a courtyard, a sports pavilion and water play area. Over a hundred companies and shops call Saint-Alexandre-de-Kamouraska home, including the recent arrival of an artisanal bakery – La Boulangerie Fleur de Farine located at the centre of the village. The agri-food sector is also thriving thanks to many farm shops. The centre of the village features many beautiful, Victorian-era homes and a cemetery with magnificent cast-iron doors. A hike on the Rang Saint-Gérard Est is also worth your while. The Saint-Alexandre Music Camp was absolutely right to lay the foundations of its main pavilion in the area about fifty years ago. Built in the middle of the forest, the establishment is a cultural gem where musicians from all over come and play a wide range of musical instruments. Travelling south, towards Pohénégamook, the Morin Lake Dam is one of the most important remaining elements of the industrial heritage of Kamouraska.
